The newly opened Market Street Boba & Beans at 35 N Market St, Frederick, MD 21701 has quickly become a local hangout for unique drinks and great pastries. Although we wanted a bit more history and personal explanations from Boba & Beans, we have yet to get a response via direct message or email.
When we dropped by, all the seats were full and everyone was practicing safe social distancing — yay!
What is bubble tea?
Bubble tea is a tea-based drink. Originating in Taichung, Taiwan in the early 1980s, it includes chewy tapioca balls or a wide range of other toppings. Ice-blended versions are frozen and put into a blender, resulting in a slushy consistency. There are many varieties of the drink with a wide range of flavors. — Wikipedia
Market Street has both traditional tapioca pearls and fresh juice loaded with fruity bits — the “classic” is black tea with milk and boba, if you really want to play it safe.
What does bubble tea taste like?
Ours was a bit too watery but others have praised Boba & Beans for “a delightful latte and americano”, “black tea coconut boba and it was already the top drink I’ve had” — Google reviews.
It was odd to not see variants of tea on their menu, but they can most likely make it upon request (again, no response was provided by Boba).
For those who have not had boba before, we definitely recommend asking the baristas for advice, asking your friends, and checking out other articles such as Thrillist and Eater for a bit of background information on what to expect.
How the process works
We walked in without knowing what to expect, try, or any insight into bubble tea. We wished there was a bit more handholding to walk us through the process outside of the menu boards so we took our best guess at a drink that would give us a new experience but not taste too out-there.
Pick a size, hot or cold, shaken or blended, type of tea, flavor, and topping.
Our order and takeaways
Our order was a 16 oz cold shaken fruit tea with peach flavor and rainbow popping bubbles. It came out very sweet, but a tad bit too watery. However, we also got a dipped chocolate chip cookie which was delicious!
New York Style Pastries — Oh My!
We loved their pastries, especially the dipped chocolate chip cookie!
“Even better, they have authentic New York baked goods – black and white cookies, scones, and more importantly real bagels (not a soft round roll with a hole in the middle)!” — Google review
